The Path Towards Addressing Adverse Impacts of Light and Noise Pollution on Terrestrial Biodiversity and Ecosystems
Key outputs of PLAN-B
PLAN-B will create the enabling conditions to support and enhance activities planned in the EU biodiversity strategy and provide a new path towards meeting the EU and international biodiversity targets.
An Innovative Framework
A framework and supporting handbook for assessing light and noise pollution impacts to inform environmental decision-making
A Pollution Database
New Scientific Models
Innovative Pollution Solutions
Legal & Policy frameworks
Recommendations for enhancing legal and policy frameworks to reduce light and noise pollution impacts on terrestrial biodiversity
Communities of Practice (CoPs)
An alternative plan is required to achieve the the EU’s 2030 biodiversity target. PLAN-B takes an integrated, multidisciplinary and multi-actor approach to deliver better understanding and support reduction of light and noise pollution impacts on terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The Journey So Far: PLAN-B’s Milestone Meeting
On June 14, 2024, PLAN-B held its first General Assembly, bringing together the entire consortium and Advisory Board members. This pivotal meeting offered us an invaluable opportunity to assess the progress of our project, discuss ongoing work, plan future steps,...
[Article] Monitoring, trends and impacts of light pollution
A new scientific paper has recently been published by Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, which outlines trends and impacts on light pollution. The article includes contributions from some of the scientific experts on light pollution in the PLAN-B consortium, such...
Defining Mechanistic Pathways for Anthropogenic Noise Impact on Avian Species
Our first peer-reviewed publication from the PLAN-B project focuses on mechanistic pathways of anthropogenic noise impact on birds, providing a potential basis for predicting how birds may respond to noise in different settings. Access to article Defining Mechanistic...
International Day of Light
The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine,...
PLAN-B, presented in the Beat the Big Buys podcast
Our colleague Yana Yakusina was a guest on the Sandy Rosenthal's podcast and had the opportunity to present the objectives of our project to her audience. Sandy speaks with Yana Yakushina (Ghent, Belgium) about her focus on establishing a legal framework for...
The PLAN-B piloting activities starts in Gdansk to tackle noise and light pollution
The Gadnsk Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Poland) hosted the first PLAN-B meeting to set the scientific roadmap for the piloting activities in the city. Review of Site Visit Objectives The meeting started with a discussion on overall objectives for...

Communities of Practice
A CoP is a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.
Local communities -including public authorities, private companies generating light and noise pollution, local researchers and NGOs and citizens- will work together to monitorize the light and noise pollution in their local areas.
Local biodiversity monitoring programmes will be invited to work with these communities of Practice, share their knowledge and improve their practices related wit noise and light pollution.
Four regions will host these Communities of Practice: Germany, Poland, Brazil and Spain. Stay tuned if you want to take part in thes communities during the project.
